At that time, Bhikkhu Subhuti was sitting in the assembly. He rose up, uncovered his right shoulder, knelt on his right knee, joined his hands, and addressed the Buddha, “Your Eminence, it is extraordinary how much the Bodhisattvas have benefited from your skillful support and guidance. So, Your Eminence, how should men and women who are seeking Enlightenment live? How should they control their thoughts?” The Buddha replied, “Very good, Subhuti. As you say, the Buddha has been skillful in supporting and guiding the Bodhisattvas. So listen carefully, I will teach those who are seeking Enlightenment the way to live and the way to control their thoughts.” Subhuti said, “Yes, Your Eminence, I will gladly listen.”
This is what I heard. One time the Buddha was staying with 1,250 monks {and many Bodhisattvas} at Anathapindika Park of Jeta Forest in the city of Sravasti. In the morning, the Buddha put on his robe, took his bowl, and entered the great city to collect alms. [In the midst of the city, He gathered food in succession, then returned to his residence.] After finishing his meal, He put away his robe and bowl, washed his feet, sat down {on a prearranged seat, crossed his legs, kept his body straight, and focused his mind. Many monks then approached the Buddha, bowed at his feet, walked around him three times, and sat to one side.}
